He was the son of a German physician and Swiss architect, Forster grew up in Davos, a winter resort in eastern Switzerland. He studied at the famous Swiss private school Institut Montana Zugerberg.

In 1990, when he was 20 years old, Forster moved to New York. Over the next three years, he attended New York University of Cinematography, created several documentaries. In 1995, he moved to Hollywood and directed the first $ 10,000 movie, Loungers, which won the Slamdance Audience Award. Forster's first full-length psychological drama, "All Together," was nominated for the Sundance Film Festival.

His first famous film is Monster Ball (2002), in which Halle Berry won an Oscar for Best Actress. His next film, Fairyland (2004), is based on the real life story of Peter Pan author James Barry. The film was nominated for five Golden Globe Awards and seven Academy Awards, including an Academy Award for Best Picture. Forster received a BAFTA nomination for Best Director and a Golden Globe nomination for Best Director.

Forster's next film, The Wind Runner, is an adaptation of Khaled Hosseini's bestselling book of the same name, written by David Benioff and starring British newcomer Khalid Abdullah. The film's protagonist is an Afghan-American man who returns to his war-torn country to rescue his former best friend's son. "Kite Runner" was released on December 14, 2007 and has grossed $ 73 million worldwide.

Forster directed the twenty-second James Bond film, Quantum of Solace, which was released in the US on January 2, 2008, shortly before his 39th birthday, making him the youngest filmmaker in Bond history (breaking the previous record, which set by Guy Hamilton, who was 41 when he filmed Goldfinger, five years before Forster was born). Quantum of Solace was released in the UK on October 31, 2008. It was the third highest-grossing Bond story after 007: The Coordinates of Skyfall and Casino Royale, which grossed more than $ 586 million worldwide.
