April 27, 1922, Philadelphia - December 24, 2012 - American actor.
Graduated from Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University), where he studied acting, and later appeared in theater productions. In 1950, he began appearing on various television series, including Inner Sanctum, Studio One and Playhouse 90. The first feature film with his participation was the film "Grubstake" (1952), then he appeared in the crime drama "Time Table" (1956). In 1957, he played the role of a juror in Sidney Lumet's 12 Angry Men, a famous film about the role of the jury in the fate of an alleged criminal. Klugman returned to the theater in 1959, participating in Broadway productions. In 1962, he played the role of Alcoholic Anonymous in the award-winning film Days of Wine and Roses, which focused on alcohol addiction. Although Klugman continued to act in films and on stage, most of his work was in television roles. In 1960, he appeared in several episodes of Naked City and The Twillight Zone, and his role in The Defenders earned him an Emmy in 1964. In 1970, he played the unscrupulous sports journalist Oscar Madison in the television adaptation of Neil Simon's The Strange Couple, which he also previously starred in a Broadway production. Klugman starred opposite Tony Randall (his best friend) as Felix Unger on the series and earned two Emmy Awards (1971 and 1973) for his role. The series ended in 1975, and the following year, Klugman made his debut as a Los Angeles medical examiner on Quincy, ME, a popular drama series that ran until 1983. which earned him several Emmy nominations. In 1989, Klugman underwent surgery to cure throat cancer and was unable to speak for several years. He eventually returned to acting, and his later work includes roles in an updated version of Strange Couple: Together Again (1993) and the TV series Diagnosis Murder and The Jordan Investigation.
