Hal Roach - biography, date of birth, place of birth, filmography, clips, Producer, Director, Writer, Actor, Composer.
January 14, 1892 - November 2, 1992 - American producer and director, screenwriter, actor. Born in Elmira, New York. He began to dream of performances as a schoolboy, under the impression of the works of Mark Twain. In 1912, Roach arrived in Hollywood, where he began working as an assistant in silent films. A few years later, having inherited, Hal began making films of his own, along with his friend Harold Lloyd; So, in 1915, Roach produced about two dozen short films. In the same year, 1915, Hal married actress Marguerite Nichols. Two children were born from the marriage - a son Hal Jr. and a daughter Margarita.
Unable to gain a foothold in downtown Los Angeles, Roach opened his film company, Hal Roach Studios, in Culver City. During the 20s and 30s, Roach worked extensively with his friend Lloyd (who was considered the main earner of money), and also collaborated with Will Rogers, Max Davidson, Charlie Chase, Harry Langdon, Telma Todd, Patsy Kelly, and comedy duet Laurel and Hardy. Roach's biggest and most significant rival early in his career was producer Mac Sennett. In 1925, Roach managed to lure Sennett's director F. Richard Jones to himself. During this period, Hal himself acted in many films, not only as a producer, but also as a screenwriter and director. In the late 1920s, his films moved into the sound film format. During 1921 alone, more than 60 films were released under his patronage. These films were short, often just 15 minutes of entertainment. Hal Roach's complete filmography consists of 1200 movies; and in the film industry, he worked for 76 years - his first film is dated 1914, the last - in 1990. The comic duo Laurel-Hardy was also a huge success; in 1931 a 65-minute comedy was released, and from that time on, shorts began to be diluted with full-length films. In the late 30s and early 40s, Roach again experimented a lot with short films, choosing between 40 and 50 minutes. In 1941, his wife Margarita died, with whom he lived together for 26 years. After the death of his first wife, Roach married again, to Lucille Prin. Roach was drafted into military service in 1942 at the age of 50. His studio then passed into the department of the army and stopped producing entertainment films and started producing educational and military films that raised the morale and fighting spirit of the soldiers. In 1955, Roach handed over control to his son and reduced his activity. However, his name in the credits of films happened more than once, the last time he acted as an executive producer in 1990. Hal's real activity, however, ended in the late 1950s. It is known that the son did not turn out to be the same brilliant financier as his father, and Hal had to intervene in the management more than once and extract his brainchild from financial troubles. The studio was sold in the early 1960s.
In 1984, the 92-year-old producer was awarded an honorary Oscar. In the spring of 1992, after his 100th birthday, Hal was a guest at the next Academy Awards. By coincidence, the microphones failed during his speech; host Billy Crystal then joked that it happened quite naturally - Hal Roach took his first steps in the film industry in the era of silent films. Hal Roach died of pneumonia on November 2, 1992, two months before his 101st birthday, at his home in Bel Air, California. Buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in the city where he spent his childhood.
