October 5, 1878 - April 24, 1965 - American actress.
When she was 10 years old, the family moved to Columbus, Ohio. Soon, her father, who was a railway engineer, died in a railway accident, and Louise remained in the care of her mother. She dropped out of school at 16 and ran away from home with the desire to pursue a career in the entertainment industry. Initially, she participated in vaudeville and Broadway productions, and in 1922 she made her film debut in the film The Glory of Clementine. In 1924, she had her first major role in the film "The City That Never Sleeps" .
Louise took her pseudonym in honor of her friend Paul Dresser, a popular songwriter at the beginning of the 20th century, brother of Theodor Dreiser. In 1928, Louise became one of the first three actresses to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress in His Country .
In 1934, Dresser played the role of Empress Elizabeth Petrovna in the film The Bloody Empress. She last appeared in 1937 as Ellen Clarke in Salem's Girl. In 1957, Louise took part in Ralph Edwards' television program "This is Your Life" .
Dresser was married twice, but had no children. Her first husband was Jack Gardner, who died in 1951. She later married musician Jack Norworth, but their marriage ended in divorce. Louise Dresser died on April 24, 1965 after bowel surgery in Woodland Hills at the age of 86. She is buried in the Californian city of Glendale. For her contribution to cinema, Dresser was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
