Born in Sweden in the city of Ostersund, located in the Jamtland county. As a child, he was fond of hockey and at the same time began to play in amateur theater, thanks to which he met with the theater teacher Ingemar Lind, who headed the Institute of Performing Arts he founded near Ostersund.
In 1975-1978 he studied at the School of Performing Arts in Malmo, where he met the director Peter Oskarson. Thanks to him, he was able to get a job at the Skonsky Theater, where he worked for four years. In 1980, he first appeared in the television production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. In 1982, Rolf moved to Gavle, where he began acting in the newly founded People's Theater. At the same time, he began to act in secondary roles in films. He starred only in 1991 in the film "Onskas", but was noticed by critics only after the film "Min store tjocke far" ("My Big Fat Father", 1992). Subsequently, he played the role of Commissioner Kurt Wallander in a series of films based on the works of Hennig Mankell, as well as the role of Gunwald Larsson in a number of films about Police Commissioner Martin Becke. In 1993, Lassgard received the Best Actor nomination for the Golden Beetle for his role in My Big Fat Father.
