Born August 27, 1929 in New York to a Jewish family and spent his early years in Manhattan and the Bronx. In 1950 he graduated from New York University, where he studied philosophy and English. At 22, he wrote his first novel, The Kiss Before Death, for which he received the Edgar Poe prize. The first play of the writer was the adaptation of Mac Hyman's novel Hard to be a Sergeant, a comedy about the adventures of a redneck conscript while serving in the US Air Force, written in 1955 for a television production and marked the beginning of the career of actor Andy Griffith. In 1958, the play was filmed, and Nick Adams starred in one of the main roles. In 1964, a television series starring Sammy Jackson was created based on the play. In 1967, Rosemary's Baby, Levin's most famous novel, was published.
