His father Sherrod Moore is African American, and his mother, Marilyn Wilson, a business consultant, was Irish, French and Canadians. The name Shemar is a combination of the first three letters of the names of his parents. When Moore was a child, he lived with his mother in the Netherlands until he was ten years old. Shemar has three brothers - Cochineau, Sheburra and Chenon Moore.
His mother, who graduated in mathematics, worked as a teacher in Bahrain and Denmark for several years. Moore lived for a time in her hometown of Boston, and when they returned to California in the late 70s, mother and son settled in Chico.
