Born March 16, 1926 - American actor, comedian, director, and writer. He began performing with musical numbers as a child, and as an adult, he adopted the pseudonym Joe Lewis, which he later changed to Jerry Lewis, so as not to create confusion with boxer Joe Louis and comedian Joe E. Lewis. In the mid-1940s, Lewis met singer Dean Martin, with whom he soon organized a comedy duo, which brought them both great success and popularity. Initially, they performed their humorous acts in nightclubs, followed by a radio broadcast, then their own television show, and the result was a series of comedy films at the Paramount Pictures studio. Amid their great success, DC Comics released a comic book series entitled The Adventures of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis .
However, over the years, the role of Dean Martin in the duo began to decline noticeably and in the summer of 1956 he broke up. Despite this, Lewis and Martin remained very popular in show business, continuing their solo performances. In the future, for a long time they refused to comment on their breakup and did not appear in public together. The two of them were seen again only in 1976 at one of the telethons, and the former colleagues finally reconciled only in the late 1980s after the death of their son Dean Martin. They last appeared together on the same stage in 1989 at Dean Martin's last live show in Las Vegas. In the late 1950s, Jerry Lewis went on to star in Paramount Studios and also released his own music album. In the 1960s, he directed a number of comedy films such as The Ladies Man (1961), The Nutty Professor (1963) and Family Values ??(1965). Lewis also taught directing at the University of Southern California at Los Angeles, and his students included Steven Spielberg and George Lucas. In 1994, the actor made his Broadway debut in the musical "Damn Yankee", where he played the role of the devil. In the 1990s, he also appeared in a number of films on the big screen, including The Arizona Dream (1993) and Jokes Aside (1995) .
Over the years of his career, Jerry Lewis has received various awards for his work in television and film. In 2006 he received an honorary Emmy and in 2009 he received an honorary Oscar. In 2006, the Minister of Culture of France awarded the actor the Order of the Legion of Honor, calling him “the favorite clown of the French people” .
Jerry Lewis has been married twice. His first wife, former singer Patti Palmer, bore him six sons. Together with his second wife, Sandy Pitnick, Lewis adopted a daughter in 1992.
The actor has serious health problems - for several years he has been actively fighting prostate cancer, diabetes and pulmonary fibrosis. To treat the latter, in the early 2000s, he began taking the drug prednisone, which is why he gained a lot of weight. Jerry Lewis currently lives with his second wife in Las Vegas.
