May 3, 1906 - September 25, 1987 - American actress. Best known for her role as Bridget O'Shaughnessy in The Maltese Falcon (1941) .
Astor began her long film career as a teenager in silent films in the early 1920s. With the advent of sound cinematography, she moved to talkie, but her career in this direction was almost destroyed by scandals in the mid-1930s. Astor's parents sued her, later she was convicted of adultery, and was also forced to fight for custody of her daughter with her ex-husband. After overcoming all these difficulties in her personal life, Astor continued her successful on-screen career, ultimately winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in The Great Lies (1941). She signed a seven-year contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, and continued to appear in film, television and stage appearances until her retirement in 1964. Astor is also known as the author of five novels. Her autobiography became a bestseller, as did her last book, Life in Cinema (1969), which she wrote about her career. Director Lindsay Anderson wrote about her in 1990: “When two or three personalities who love cinema are gathered together, then there is only one name - Mary Astor. Everyone agrees that this actress had a special charm, her qualities were so deep that in reality it seemed that she was illuminating everything with her brilliant acting. "
