From 1911 to 1951 he played roles in more than 325 films, from 1912 to 1917 he directed 44 silent films. He was the chief director of the film company The Oz Film Manufacturing Company, owned by the famous writer Lyman Frank Baum. The main directors who directed MacDonald in their films are John Ford, Preston Sturges and Frank Capra.
