American film and television actor. Michael Murphy was born into the family of a sailor and a teacher. After serving in the Marine Corps, he entered the Arizona Institute, after which he himself became an English language and performing arts teacher in Los Angeles. His profession provided him with the connections he needed. Michael Murphy was familiar with Woody Allen, and after working together in Woody Allen's masterpiece "Manhattan" became friends. His acting career spanned over forty years, and mostly included supporting roles. Michael Murphy's closest collaboration was with director Robert Altman.
