January 16, 1906 - May 13, 1964 - British actress.
She began her career on the theater stage, and after success in Liverpool and London, attracted the attention of Broadway producers, and in 1932 made her debut in New York in the production of Rasputin and the Empress. Her film debut took place in the USA in the film adaptation of this play that same year. For her subsequent dramatic film role in Cavalcade, Winyard was nominated for an Oscar, becoming the first British actress to be nominated for an Academy Award in the main female category. After several more roles in Hollywood, the actress returned to England, where in the following years she worked almost exclusively in the theater.
In the late 1930s, Winyard returned to the big screen, starting a film career in her homeland. After the Second World War, the actress went to the sidelines in the cinema, playing mainly the roles of caring mothers, but continued to shine in the theater, in particular in the West End. She died in 1964 in London from kidney failure at the age of 58, her body was cremated in the Golders Green crematorium, and her ashes were scattered.
