Born May 25, 1943, New York, USA - American actress and singer.
Studied at the Juilliard School. The daughter of Hill Jones, a successful 1950s singer, she began her career as a child with television roles.
In 1968, Uggams won the Tony Award for Best Actress in Hallelujah, Baby !. The following year, she received her own television show, becoming the first African-American female presenter on national television.
Leslie Uggams' greatest success was the starring role of Kizzy in the 1977 miniseries Roots. The role earned the actress an Emmy nomination for Best Actress in a Miniseries or Film and a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Television Series - Drama.
In 1983 she won an Emmy for hosting another show of her own.
