March 29, 1918 - August 17, 1990 - American actress and singer, winner of the Tony Award for the title role in the Negro version of the musical Hello, Dolly! in 1968.
In 1986, she won the Daytime Emmy for her performance as the fairy godmother in ABC Afterschool Special's Cindy Eller: A Modern Fairy Tale .
Her song "Takes Two to Tango" was one of the top ten hits in 1952. In 1976, she received the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award, and on October 17, 1988, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
