Barrett was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York and graduated from Stevensant High School in Manhattan.
Barrett played Dr. Lem Hewitt, one of the main characters, on ABC's Come On, Ted. He had a supporting role in the Oscar-winning film "The Hurt Locker" .
He played minor roles in the Law & Order franchise. In one of the episodes of the cult television series The Sopranos, Barrett played the role of a squatter and drug dealer, and also visited the pilot episode "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia", the finale of "The Office" (one of the new employees of "Dunder Mifflin") and an episode of "Detective Monk" (lottery fanatic). In the film "Larry Crown" he had a small role as one of the classmates of the character Tom Hanks. In 2016, Barrett landed a regular role in the television series Timeless .
