Born May 6, 1953 - American actress.
In 1981, Whitfield made her television debut on the NBC series Hill Street Blues. Two years later, she made her big screen debut in the comedy Doctor Detroit, and then went on to appear on television in shows such as Cagney and Lacey, Miami Police, St. Elsver and Matlock. On the big screen, in subsequent years she had supporting roles in the films Silverado (1985) and Jaws: Revenge (1987). From 1988-89, she co-starred in the short-lived ABC series Heartbeat, and then co-starred with Oprah Winfrey in the miniseries Women of Brewster Manor .
Whitfield achieved the greatest acclaim for her performance as Josephine Baker in HBO's 1991 biopic The Josephine Baker Story. The role earned her an Emmy Award for Outstanding Actress in a Miniseries or Film (becoming the first black actress to win an award in that category) and a Golden Globe nomination. The success has led Whitfield to starring roles in a number of other made-for-television films. On the big screen, she had a much more limited list of roles, playing only one leading role in the romantic comedy "A Fine Line Between Love and Hate." Her film partner was Martin Lawrence, who was twelve years younger than Whitfield. In 1997, she starred in the independent film Eve's Retreat, which was critically acclaimed. Whitfield often complained Whitfield spent the 2000s on the sidelines in various television and motion pictures such as Madea's Family Reunion (2006). She had minor roles in the series Boston School and Without a Trace. In recent years, she has starred in a number of low-budget films on various topics, and in 2014 she was invited to play a supporting role in Shonda Rhimes' TV series How to Avoid Punishment for Murder. In 2015, Whitfield was invited to play the central role of the family's matriarch in the Oprah Winfrey Network series Greenleaf, which became her first television project, where she starred on a regular basis.
