Born in 1964 in Asmara, Eritrea (then a province of Ethiopia). Due to the outbreak of the war of independence, at the age of 13, he was evacuated by a military plane alone, without his Italian parents, to Italy, lived for some time in Rome and Istanbul, in the 1980s he moved to New York, where he graduated from the film school at New York University. Has dual citizenship - Italy and the United States.
In 1993, he shot his first medium-sized film, The Boatman, about his sailing in a boat on the Ganges River and his acquaintance with Indian religious teachings. The director's first full-length film was the 2008 documentary Below Sea Level (about the life of a community of homeless post-beatniks in the California desert), which was noted at many film festivals (in particular, it was awarded the Horizons Jury Prize for the best documentary at the 65th Venice film festival). In 2010, he shot an interview film with a Mexican drug mafia killer from Ciudad Juarez entitled "Hired Assassin - Camera 164" .
In 2013, Rosie's new film, Sacred Roman Ring, received the Golden Lion at the 70th Venice Film Festival. According to critics, the picture evokes associations with Italo Calvino's book "Invisible Cities". Rosie himself said that he wanted to tell a story that goes beyond the boundaries of everyday life, about the growing identity crisis in Italy.
In 2016, Rosie's documentary Fires in the Sea about the problems of illegal immigration, filmed on the island of Lampedusa, where refugees from the African continent who want to enter the European Union travel primarily, received the Golden Bear at the 66th Berlin Film Festival, and Selected to represent Italy in the Best Foreign Language Film category of the Oscar on 26 September 2016 .
