He considers himself a continuer of the traditions of Robert Bresson and Chantal Ackermann. Started working in the film industry as a cinematographer on several independent projects (including Frederick Wiseman's High School) and as an actor (Finding One-Eyed Jimmy, a black comedy starring Steve Buscemi and Samuel L. Jackson) .
He first caught the attention of film critics and audiences in 1994 when his film Clean Shaved was shown at the Cannes International Film Festival as part of the Un Certain Regard program. This film traces the last days of the life and death of a person suffering from a severe mental disorder, who has just left a psychiatric clinic, who is sent in search of his daughter living in a foster family.
