Charlie's father is boxer Alfie Rothwell, and his mother is an English actress and DJ Patsy Palmer. In 1994, Charlie's parents divorced, and soon his mother married taxi driver Richie Merkell. Charlie's mother gave birth to three children from her second husband.
Rothwell began his acting career in 2013 with a cameo in the TV series Rise. Later, the actor starred in the TV series "Catastrophe" and "May Day". In 2014, Charlie played the role of Ralph in the crime action movie "Plastic" directed by Julian Gilby.
In 2017, Christopher Nolan's military-historical film "Dunkirk" was released, in which Charlie played a small role. The film was nominated for an Oscar in 8 categories at once, but won only 3: Best Sound, Best Editing and Best Editing.
