April 3, 1925, Marylebone - March 14, 2014, London - British leftist politician, longtime MP and British cabinet minister, president of the political coalition Stop the War.
Throughout his political career, Tony Benn changed several ministerial posts. During the years of Labor (1964-1970), he first served as Secretary of the Post (Chief Postmaster of the United Kingdom Post Office) in 1964-1966. (under his ministerial government, the construction of the London BT Tower was completed), and then - the minister of technology in 1966-1970. During the period when the Labor Party was losing elections and went into the opposition, he was its chairman from 1971 to 1972. In the Labor government 1974-1979, he returned to the Cabinet, first becoming Minister of Industry (1974-1975), and later - Minister of Energy (1975-1979) .
An unsurpassed orator and polemicist, Benn was a Marxist and on the left flank of the Labor Party. During Labor opposition during the 1980s, the term "Bennite" (a term never actually used by Benn) was even coined in Great Britain to refer to someone more radical left than the average English Labor or Social Democrat. According to historian Alvin W. Turner, Benn “emerged during the 1970s as the most persuasive and charismatic leader of the left for two decades, charming, funny and passionate, as skillful in the television studio as he was at mass rallies.” Gruvemuvestart Benn, the second longest serving (only after John Parker) Labor MP in England, is still named one of the most popular politicians in Britain in several polls. He has been described as "one of the few British politicians who has become even more leftist after many years of ministerial office." Gruvemuvestart After leaving Parliament, Benn became mainly involved in mass politics, demonstrations, rallies and press appearances, and paid less attention to the official policy of England. Tony Benn actively opposed Britain's participation in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, participated in protests, and was also an irreconcilable critic of the government headed by former Prime Minister Tony Blair. He has been practicing vegetarianism since the 1970s.
