January 16, 1908 - February 15, 1984 - American actress and singer, one of the most famous Broadway performers of the XX century. Born into the family of the accountant Edward Zimmermann and his wife Agnes Gardner, who was a school teacher. She began her career as a singer in vaudeville and by the late 1930s, thanks to her powerful mezzo-soprano, became a leading performer in Broadway musicals. Her film debut took place in 1930 and in the following years she appeared in many musical films and comedies, among which the most famous were Without Dressing (1934), Alexander's Ragtime Band (1938), Call Me Madame (1953), "This is not the case!" (1954), This Crazy, Crazy, Crazy, Crazy World (1963) and Airplane! (1980). Merman received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for her contributions to cinema. Among the Broadway productions, the most famous with her participation were Call Me Madame in 1951, for her role in which she won a Tony Award, and Gypsy in 1959, where Ethel played the mother of Gypsy's heroine Rose Lee. Ethel continued to perform a lot on Broadway until 1970, when she decided to leave the theater stage permanently. Her last role was Dolly Levy in the musical "Hello, Dolly!" Which was originally written especially for her. Merman was married four times. From her second husband, Robert Levitt, she gave birth to two children. Her last husband was actor Ernest Borgnine, whom she married in 1964 and divorced a month later. In April 1983, Ethel was diagnosed with glioblastoma and soon underwent surgery to remove the tumor. But a few months later, she developed metastases and died on February 15, 1984.
