December 10, 1886 - November 7, 1959 - English boxer and American actor, winner of the Academy Award for Best Actor (1936) .
Born in a small town in the family of a bishop. When Victor was still a child, his family moved to South Africa, where he had four brothers. At the age of 14, Victor left his family and enlisted in the ranks of the British Army, wishing to take part in the Anglo-Boer War. But still, he was not sent to the front, but enlisted in the ranks of the guards at Windsor Castle, and when his real age was found out, he was completely forced to leave the army. Four years later, he moved to Canada, where he began to earn a living by participating in boxing matches. He has had several notable victories in the ring, and his most famous fight was with future first black world heavyweight champion Jack Johnson. In addition to the boxing ring, Victor also performed as a heavyweight in the circus during his time in Canada. In 1913 he returned to England, where he enlisted in the Royal Irish Fusiliers Army, in whose ranks he fought in the First World War. During the war years, he rose to the rank of captain, and for some time was the head of the Baghdad Military Police. In the last years of the war, McLaglen returned to boxing and in 1918 received the title of heavyweight champion of the British Army. After the end of the war, he stayed in England, where his career in silent films began. His career took off in the early 1920s when he moved to Hollywood. Later, Victor successfully moved from silent to talkie, and achieved his greatest popularity in 1935, when he starred in the film "The Informant". For this role, he was awarded the Oscar for Best Actor. Once again, he was nominated for an Oscar towards the end of his career in 1953 for his role in the film The Quiet Man, starring John Wayne. Particularly popular were the roles of McLaglen in John Ford's Westerns. Towards the end of his career, he also appeared on television a couple of times. Victor was married three times. His first marriage was to Enid Lamont in 1919. She gave birth to his daughter Sheila and son Andrew, who later became a producer and director. After her death in 1942, he married Susan Bruggeman (1943-1948), and after a divorce - Margaret Pumphrey in 1948. Victor McLaglen died of a heart attack on November 7, 1959 in a small town in California, while being already a US citizen. For his contributions to cinema, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
