1897-1960 - American director, actor and producer. Best known for his role in the movie All About Eve (1950) .
Born into a Jewish family. Mother Sofia died in 1955 at the age of 78.
Participated in the First World War. After the October Revolution, the family moved to France. He first arrived in the United States in 1922. Then he was in Russia, where he married Russian actress Evgenia Leontovich in 1923 (divorced in 1949). Returned to the United States on a flight that docked at Ellis Island in July 1925. On the passenger list, he was listed as Gregory Ratov.
He shot the picture "Intermezzo" (1939) with Ingrid Bergman and the Russophile film "Song of Russia" (1944). He is also known as one of two producers who first bought the rights to production of James Bond films from Ian Fleming (the second was Michael Garrison).
He died of leukemia on December 14, 1960 in the Swiss city of Solothurn. His body was returned to the United States for burial at Mount Hebron Cemetery in Flushing, New York.
