February 6, 1901 - March 22, 1979 - American actor and studio performer at 20th Century Fox.
He began acting in films in 1918 after a successful appearance on Broadway, paired with actress Jeanne Eagles. He gained fame after the film "Youthful Spirit" (1923), and gradually began to star in the main roles. Later he starred in films with leading silent film actresses: Paula Negri, Gloria Swenson, Colleen Moore, Barbara La Marr, Viola Dana, Anna Nelsson, Mary Astor and Blanche Sweet. In 1925, the Photoplay columnist wrote about him: “Girls, Ben Lyon looks harmless, but we have reliable information that he is irresistible, so watch your actions. He is also a great actor, and if women fall in love with him, he can help them. ”Gruvemuvestart The 1930 film Hell's Angels was a great success and brought Jean Harlow to fame, but the participation of Ben Lyon, who played a pilot during the First World War, was also highly acclaimed. On July 17, 1946, he met the young aspiring actress Norma Jean Dougherty. After meeting her for the first time, he stated that she was "Jean Harlow over and over again!" He organized a screen test for her, offered to change her name, signed with her, like Marilyn Monroe, her first studio contract. During World War II, Lyon and his wife, actress Bibi Daniels, settled in London. The couple, along with comedian Vic Oliver, took part in the “Hello Gun!” Radio series, which aired from 1940 to 1949. They were replaced in 1950 by Life with Lyon, which also featured events from the life of the actor and his children, Richard Barbara. The program aired on the BBC and independent television from 1954 to 1960. The life of the actor was told in the program "This Is Your Life" by Eamon Andrews, released in March 1963 on BBC Television Theater.
Lyon married actress Bebe Daniels in June 1930, they had two children: daughter Barbara (born 1932) and son Richard, whom they adopted. Daniels suffered a severe stroke in 1963 and retired from vigorous activity. She suffered a second stroke in late 1970, and died at her home in London in March 1971. In 1974, Lyon married actress Marian Nixon, whom he had known since 1920. They remained married until his death.
On March 22, 1979, Lyon and his second wife, Marian Nixon, were vacationing together on the Queen Elizabeth 2 cruise ship near Honolulu, Hawaii when Lyon suffered a fatal heart attack. He was 78 years old. He was cremated and his ashes were buried in the chapel columbarium at Hollywood Forever Cemetery next to first wife Bebe Daniels.
His contributions to US cinema are starred on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, 1724 Vine Street.
