May 16, 1905 - August 12, 1982 - American theater and film actor, Oscar winner, father of actor Peter Fonda, actress Jane Fonda and grandfather of actress Bridget Fonda.
Fonda became known as a Broadway actor. His debut in Hollywood took place in 1935. His career took off after receiving an Oscar nomination in 1941 for his role as Tom Joad in The Grapes of Wrath, based on the novel of the same name by John Steinbeck about a farm family from Oklahoma who, during the Great Depression, in search of a better life, moved to West, falling into the Dusty Cauldron.
Throughout his six decades in Hollywood, Henry Fonda has maintained his image of a strong, charming man in films that have become classics of Hollywood: The Case at the Ox Bowe, Mr. Roberts, Twelve Angry Men. He later starred in heavy epic films such as Once Upon a Time in the West (as the villainous killer) directed by Sergio Leone, as well as light comedies such as Yours, Mine and Ours with Lucille Ball. A few months before his death, the seriously ill Fonda was finally awarded an Oscar for Best Actor in the drama On the Golden Lake .
Henry Fonda was the patriarch in a family of famous actors: daughter Jane, son Peter, granddaughter Bridget and grandson Troy Garity. His family and close friends called him Hank. In 1999, Henry Fonda was recognized by the American Film Institute as one of the greatest actors in history.
