Raised at Balliol College, Oxford; he received his bachelor's degree in literature in 1714 and his master's degree in 1717. With his uncle, James Pound, also a famous astronomer, he found everything he needed to make astronomical observations. In 1721 he was appointed professor of astronomy at Oxford, in 1727 he discovered the aberration of light and in January 1729 he presented his famous work on this to the Royal Society. In 1728, he discovered nutation of the earth's axis, in 1742 he was appointed director of the Greenwich Observatory - Astronomer Royal.
