Holland began his career as a dancer performing hip-hop at the Nifty Feet dance school in Wimbledon. In 2006, he performed with the school's dance group at the Richmond Festival, where he was noticed by choreographer Lynn Page (who was a colleague of Peter Darling, choreographer of Billy Elliot and the musical of the same name).

After eight auditions and two years of training, Holland was recruited into the troupe of the musical "Billy Elliot" for the role of Michael, Billy's best friend. On June 28, 2008, he made his stage debut in this role. He gave his first performance as Billy on September 8, 2008.

In September 2008, Holland (with Tanner Pfluger) appeared on the Channel 5 news program and gave his first television interview. The following year, he became a guest of the "Comfort Factor" show on ITV1 TV channel. In the January 31st launch episode, Holland, along with Tanner Pfluger and Leighton Williams, performed a version of the Angry Dance episode from Billy Elliot before being interviewed by host Maylene Klass. Holland designed and choreographed a dance for five British schoolchildren, preparing them for their final performance on The Comfort Factor on March 28, 2009.

On March 8, 2010, on the fifth anniversary of Billy Elliot, the four actors who played Billy, including Holland himself, were invited to 10 Downing Street to meet with Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Holland starred in Billy Elliot, alternating with three other performers until May 29, 2010, when he made his last appearance at the Victoria Palace.

In 2011, Holland voiced the main character in the British version of the animated film Arietti of the Lilliputians, produced by the Japanese studio Ghibli.

Holland made his film debut, starring in the feature film Impossible directed by Juan Antonio Bayon, opposite Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor. The film premiered on September 9, 2012 at the Toronto International Film Festival, after which the film received positive reviews from critics and, subsequently, was a box office success. The film grossed $ 180.3 million worldwide, and Holland's acting has received several awards, such as the National Council of Film Critics' Breakthrough of the Year award and the London Film Critics Circle's Young British Actor of the Year award.

Holland co-starred with Saoirse Ronan in the drama film How I Love Now, which was released in the UK on October 4, 2013. He also starred as Tom Nickerson in In the Heart of the Sea (2015), directed by Ron Howard. In 2015, the actor played the role of Gregory Cromwell in the mini-series Wolf Hall on BBC Two.

On June 23, 2015, it was announced that Holland had been cast as Peter Parker / Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He made his debut in this role in Captain America: Civil War (2016). The film received positive reviews from critics and was a commercial success, grossing $ 1.1 billion at the worldwide box office, making it the highest grossing film of 2016.

In 2016, Holland co-starred with Charlie Hunnam in The Lost City of Z, a drama film directed by James Gray, which was released in April and received favorable reviews from critics. In the same year, he starred in Spider-Man: Homecoming, reprising his role in Captain America: Civil War. The film was released on 7 July.
