Born May 19, 1939 - Chinese American actress. In addition to her, there was already a child in the family - her older brother Ka Keung.
In 1941, in fear of the Japanese invasion of Hong Kong during World War II, Wing Hong moved the children to Northern China, where they remained for the next five years until the end of the war. After returning home, Kwan and his brother remained in the care of their father, since their mother filed for divorce and, leaving her family, fled to England. Wing Hong then married a Chinese woman a second time, resulting in Kwan having five more brothers. Kwan received her primary education at Maryknoll Monastery School, after which she studied dance at an English boarding school. Her desire to become a dancer led her to the Royal Ballet School in London, where she spent at least four hours daily. After receiving her education, Kwan traveled extensively, lived in France, Italy and Switzerland, and then returned to Hong Kong. In 1959, Kwan auditioned and was selected by producer Ray Stark to star in his film The World of Susie Wong. Without having any acting experience, it was rather difficult for her to stay in this role, since the creators of the picture began to consider her replacement in the person of the actress Frans Nuyen. At Stark's request, Kwan was sent to the United States, where she studied at an acting school in Hollywood, and after a series of twists and turns with the directors of Paramount Studios, Kwan got the role. After the movie was released, Kwan instantly became popular. In 1960, she, along with Ina Beilin and Hayley Mills, was awarded the Golden Globe Award as one of the most promising actress of the year. A year later, in the wake of the success of her previous work, Kwan appeared in the title role in the musical "Flower Drum Song" In 1962, while working on her third film, Main Attraction, which was filmed in the Austrian Alps, Kwan met the owner of a tourist hotel, Peter Pock, and married him a few weeks later. Soon the couple had a son, but due to the frequent filming and mother's travel, they rarely saw each other. In 1969, while filming Team Destroyers, the actress met Bruce Lee, with whom she developed a friendly relationship that lasted until his death. In 1970, two years after her divorce from Pock, the actress married Hollywood screenwriter David Giller. In the same year, she and her son returned from Hong Kong, due to the fact that her father was seriously ill. Kwan planned to stay there for a year, but ended up spending seven years there. During this time, she divorced her old spouse and founded her own production company in Hong Kong. In 1979, she returned to the United States with her son and third husband, director Norbert Meisel, where she began working on television. Her son also took up an acting career, while becoming a martial artist and stuntman. In the later years of her acting career on television, Kwan appeared as a guest on a number of television series, including Fantasy Island, Quiet Marina, Team A, and Ambulance. In 1993, the actress played one of the key roles in the semi-biographical film Dragon: The Life Story of Bruce Lee. In 1996, at the age of 33, her son Bernard died of AIDS, after which the actress began to take part in various charity events aimed at informing the masses about this disease. In the 1990s, she also appeared periodically in television commercials, showing off makeup. Nancy Kwan currently resides in Los Angeles, where she is the press secretary for the Asian-American coalition, formed in 1986 to support Asian actors in the United States.
