September 10, 1914, Winchester, Indiana, USA - September 14, 2005, Los Angeles, California - American director, producer, editor, and actor.

In 1940 he joined RKO Pictures as an editor and in 1942 was nominated for an Academy Award for Citizen Kane in the Best Editing category. Wise made his directorial debut in the 1944 horror film The Curse of the Cat People. In 1947, he directed the film noir Born to Kill, and two years later his boxing drama The Set-up was released. For the 1959 film I Want to Live! he was nominated for an Oscar for Best Director.

The award went to Wise in 1962 when the musical West Side Story, which he co-produced with Jerome Robbins, won an Oscar for Best Picture. Wise and Robbins also won Best Director. Wise's major commercial success was the 1965 musical The Sound of Music, which won five Oscars. His 1966 drama Gunboat (also known as Sand Pebbles) was nominated for eight Academy Awards at once, but never received a single gold statuette. The director's subsequent films were less successful, and one of Wise's most notable later works is the 1971 science fiction film Andromeda Strain, based on the novel by Michael Crichton, and the historical disaster film Hindenburg (1975).

From 1971 to 1975, Wise served as President of the Directors Guild of America, and from 1985 to 1988 was President of the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
