January 24, 1943, Dallas, Texas, USA - August 9, 1969, Benedict Canyon, Los Angeles, California, in the same place - American actress and model. Since childhood, she participated in beauty contests, regularly appeared on the covers and pages of glossy magazines. Since the early 1960s, she starred in small roles in entertainment television programs and series. She made her film debut in 1961 in the cameo role of a patrician woman in Richard Fleischer's film Barabbas. Until the end of the 1960s, she played thirteen diverse - mainly comedic - television and film roles, generally well received by critics. In 1968 she was nominated for a Golden Globe for her role as Jennifer North in Valley of the Dolls (1967); at the awards ceremony, she was named one of the most promising young Hollywood actresses of the year. In the same year she married film director Roman Polanski. A year later, being eight and a half months pregnant, she was brutally murdered in her own home by members of the crime commune ("Family") of Charles Manson.
Ten years after Sharon Tate's murder, the actress's mother, Doris Tate, led a public campaign against "shortcomings in the state's corrections system" in an effort to prevent the parole of murderers sentenced to life imprisonment. The campaign culminated in a California criminal law amendment that allows victims of crime and their families to make a special “victim statement” during sentencing and parole hearings for convicted offenders. Doris Tate was the first to make such a statement, speaking at the parole hearing of one of Sharon Tate's killers, Charles "Tex" Watson.
