February 10, 1914 - August 6, 2001 - jazz virtuoso
Graduated from Baltimore City College High School. He preferred to call the harmonica exactly the harmonica. He began to play professionally at the age of fourteen. I learned to play the harmonica on my own. In 1927, the harmonica was quite popular in the USA. The influential newspaper The Baltimore Sun sponsored an accordion competition in which Larry Adler's performance of Beethoven's minuet earned him first prize. A year later, he left his parental home in New York. Having met Rudy Vallee, Adler got his first job in theater, where he attracted the attention of the leader of the orchestra Paul Ash, who took Adler to play the role of a ragged street musician playing for a pittance. From there, he was hired by impresario Florenz Siegfeld and later by Lew Leslie (again as street musicians). Adler tried to get away from this role, to avoid invitations to similar roles. In 1934 he starred in a tuxedo in Paramount's Many Happy Returns, after which he was hired by British theater producer Chalse B. Cochran to appear in the London revue. Adler became famous in Britain and the British Empire, where his performances increased sales of harmonica twenty-fold and 300,000 people became members of harmonica fan clubs. In addition to his career as a musician, Adler also starred in several feature films, including Sidewalks of London (1938), in which he played a street musician. He gave concerts for soldiers of the Allied armies in the anti-Hitler coalition. Died August 7, 2001 at St Thomas's Hospital in London, at the age of 87. He was cremated at the Golders Green crematorium, where his ashes are stored in the columbarium.
