After the Anschluss of Austria in 1938, the Schell family moved to Switzerland. Maximilian Schell grew up in Zurich, which also influenced his creative development. Maximilian studied Germanic studies, art and literary history, musicology and theater studies in Zurich and Munich. He almost became a member of the football team of the Zurich club Grasshopper, of which he was a recognized fan.
