He has an older sister, Robin, and a brother, Bob, both named after Robert's father. His father is of English and French roots, while Edna's mother is of Irish and Indian descent. Fishing and horseback riding took up most of his childhood. At the age of ten, with the help of his mother, Ian got into the modeling business; every summer he traveled to New York to shoot. He had a contract with the best children's modeling agencies Click, Next, Arlene Wilson. A few years later, he had the opportunity to become a European model, Iain visited Paris, Milan and London. He was the face of GUESS designer clothes for two fall seasons and has also worked for famous fashion houses such as Versace, Esprit, Persol, Calvin Klein, Dolce & Gabbana and Gucci.
At the same time, Somerhalder performed at a drama club and worked with a local theater group. At the age of 17, he decides to devote himself to acting and goes to New York. By the age of 19, he was already working with the prestigious teacher William Esper. Ian also studied with Pressure McFadden and Anthony Abson. Ian first appeared in the club scene of the movie Black & White (but then his role was cut). This was followed by Woody Allen's film Celebrity, where Ian's role was also cut out. Among 400 applicants, he was noticed by a manager who immediately signed a contract with him. Ian's first television debut was the science fiction drama Now or Never (1999) on CBS. Somerhalder's first win was a starring role in Young Americans. (Although the show was not successful with the public, Ian continued filming on various series: CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CSI: Miami Crime Scene, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and Smallville. For one of his roles in the big movie "Life is like a home" Somerhalder was awarded the Young Hollywood Award .

's 50 Sexy Men in Fall 2002 The creators of Lost saw in Somerhalder more than the perfect texture for a gay role. Of all the actors on the series, Ian was the first to be finally and irrevocably approved for the role. He played Boone Carlisle, a young rich man. Ian himself was somewhat disappointed with his character. However, over time, Ian's character changed, more and more delighting the artist. His hero became the first victim on the island and died in the twentieth episode. Damon Lindelof responded to this that death is inevitable in a project with so many characters that it was this death that was necessary to prepare the audience for the show's finale. Therefore, the producers of the show returned Boone more than once throughout the seasons. After leaving Lost, Ian has starred in independent films such as Feels Like A Vision and The Tournament of Survival, as well as several television projects that the actor has described as bad films with bad acting. Ian's new breakthrough on television was one of the main roles in the series "The Vampire Diaries", where he played the insidious vampire Damon Salvatore.
Ian Somerhalder established the Ian Somerhalder Charitable Foundation (ISF) in 2010. In 2012, he became a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).
