Ellar's father was a musician, his mother was a dancer and artist. Ellar himself calls his parents "hippies" and "strange people." Even when Ellar was a child, his parents divorced and his mother remarried. The boy was mostly homeschooled, spending only three years in high school to earn his high school diploma. He began his career as a film actor in 2002. He is best known for his roles in the films "Fast Food Nation" and "Boyhood", in which he starred for 11 years - from the summer of 2002 to October 2013. By the time director Richard Linklater cast Ellar for the role of Mason in Adolescence, the six-year-old had already played on stage and had starred in a number of commercials and the independent film Lone Star State with Joshua Jackson. At his age, he already watched Miyazaki's films and listened to Pink Floyd and Nine Inch Nails. He was also familiar with the work of Linklater himself, having managed to watch the tape "Awakening of Life" .
