Born November 28, 1952, Saginaw, Michigan is an American theater, film, and television actress.
Best known for her role as Lieutenant Anita Van Buren in the television series Law & Order, where she starred from 1993 to 2010. Her character on the show is the longest-running primetime character in television history.
She has played in dozens of projects on the theater stage. In 1992, she received the prestigious Obie Award for her performance in the off-Broadway production of I'm Not Stupid, and won the award for the second time in 2006 for her performance in the play Birdie Blue.
She has received three NAACP awards in her career and has been nominated eight more times. She received Golden Globe Awards, Emmy Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards and an Independent Spirit Award for her performance in 2006's Lackawanna Blues.
Since the conclusion of Law & Order, Merkerson has appeared in Beautiful To Death, The Good Wife and Being Mary Jane, as well as playing a supporting mother role in the short-lived NBC soap opera Deception. In 2015, she was invited to star in the spin-off of NBC's Firefighters Chicago, Doctors of Chicago, produced by Dick Woolve, creator of Law & Order.
