August 26, 1904, Cheshire, England, UK - January 4, 1986, Santa Monica, California, USA - Anglo-American writer and actor.

Studied medicine at Cambridge between 1928 and 1929, but after only six months left the UK to spend a few weeks with his friend Auden in Berlin. Since 1928 he began to publish his works. The main theme of Isherwood's stories of that period is a critique of British snobbery. His first novels "All are conspirators" (1928) and "In memory" (1932) also touch upon the problems of the "lost generation".

In 1930-33 he worked as an English teacher in Germany. In 1932, Christopher fell in love with the German youth Heinz Nedermeier. After Hitler came to power, he left Germany. Memories of Germany formed the basis of the most famous work of the writer - the novel Farewell Berlin, on the basis of which the film Cabaret was filmed.

Christopher went to China with Auden in 1938, then went to America in 1939, where he worked as a screenwriter in the studio. In 1946, the writer received US citizenship, where he lived until the end of his days.

In the 40s Christopher became acquainted with the teachings of Vedanta and became its active preacher. His choice was largely determined by the fact that his guru Swami Prabhavananda treated the writer's homosexual inclinations without negativism. In 1965, Isherwood wrote a fictionalized biography of Ramakrishna, Ramakrishna and His Disciples.

On Valentine's Day 1953, Isherwood, then 48, met and fell in love with 18-year-old portrait painter Don Bacardi among his friends on the beach in Santa Monica. Although all Isherwood's friends were shocked by the age difference between the lovers, their relationship turned out to be extremely stable and long-term: they lived together for 33 years, until the writer's death.

In the 1970s, the writer became a prominent international advocate for the recognition of the rights of the sexual minority, one of the first to openly declare his homosexuality.
