In 1972, Robert Woodward, a young journalist who had just started at the Washington Post, was joined by another journalist, Carl Bernstein, and together they began to investigate what would become the Watergate Scandal. It all began on June 17, 1972, when five people were arrested while trying to infiltrate the headquarters of the US Democratic Party, located in one of the buildings of the Watergate complex. The involvement of these people in the US Republican Party has been proven.

Investigative journalism by Woodward and Bernstein forced the 37th President of the United States, Richard Nixon, to resign on August 9, 1974.

In the same year, Woodward and Bernstein's book about the Watergate scandal, All the President's Men, was published, which was used in the 1976 film of the same name.

In 1987, Woodward published a book about the 11th Director of Central Intelligence, William Casey, who headed the CIA from 1981-1987 under Ronald Reagan.
