Born January 9, 1941, New York City - American singer and songwriter.
In the late 1950s, the Baez family moved to the Boston area, which was then one of the centers of folk music culture. Even then, Joan began to actively perform in clubs and gain popularity. Joan's professional career began in 1959 at the Newport Folk Festival. In November 1960, her first album, Joan Baez, was released on Vanguard Records, which was a huge success. The following year, she conducted her first concert tour in US cities. In 1962, Baez's portrait appeared on the cover of Time magazine, making her famous throughout the country. This is almost official recognition of her as a national figure. Time magazine wrote: “Her voice is as clear as the air in the fall, bright, strong, untrained and thrilling soprano. She does not wear any makeup and her long dark hair hangs like a drape, parted around her long, almond-shaped face ... ".
In 1962, during the civil rights struggle of black US citizens, Joan toured the southern United States, where racial segregation was still ongoing. She demanded: "Whites and blacks should sit together at my concerts, otherwise I will not sing." In 1963, she refused to pay taxes, citing her unwillingness to support the arms race. At the same time, she created a charitable foundation, which received income from her concert activities. In 1964, she founded the Institute for the Study of Non-Violence. During the Vietnam War, Joan was actively involved in the anti-war movement, and was arrested for this. Joan traveled to universities, her social activity took on an ever-increasing scale, and a sense of belonging to what was happening in the country and the world was passed on to her from her parents. She sang songs of protest more and more often, and the audience followed her. At this time, her repertoire was filled with songs by Bob Dylan. One of them - "Farewell, Angelina" - gave the name to the seventh album of the singer.
Since 1967, a new stage began in the singer's work: gradually moving away from a purely acoustic sound, she increasingly resorted to the services of a symphony orchestra and invited experienced arrangers, such as Paul Simon, Lennon, McCartney and Jacques Brel. In 1968, it was revealed that the sale of her discs was banned in US Army stores due to her anti-war campaigns against the Vietnam War and against conscription. Joan became a zealous advocate of nonviolent action, a movement spearheaded in America by Pastor Martin Luther King, a civil rights leader and friend of Baez. Joanne's three records for the Vanguard record company went gold. In 1968, Joan married anti-war activist David Harris. She has played live with Bob Dylan, BB King.

In August 1969 she took part in the famous Woodstock rock festival. In 1973, Joan wrote and sang the song "Natalia" about the Soviet human rights activist and poet Natalya Gorbanevskaya, who was imprisoned in a special mental hospital. She also sang Bulat Okudzhava's song "Union of Friends" in Russian ("Let's join hands, friends ..."). Gruvemuvestart In 1978, Baez was scheduled to perform in Leningrad. However, the concert was canceled by Soviet officials without explanation. Despite the cancellation of the concert, Joan arrived in Moscow and met with Soviet dissidents, including Andrei Sakharov and Elena Bonner. Joan founded the International Human Rights Committee, an organization dedicated to protecting human rights. Joan was awarded the French Order of the Legion of Honor, for her political activity she was awarded the title of Doctor of Honor by several universities. Culture and politics, public sound and melody, creativity in the quiet of a room and street demonstration are inseparable sides of Joan Baez's personality. Joan Baez is one of the most prolific performers of folk rock and perhaps its most politicized spokesperson. Joan grew up in a Quaker family and is close to Quaker ideals.
