Born April 11, 1947, Neuenburg am Rhein, Germany - German and American film director.
After receiving a theater education in Munich, he was admitted to Bernd Eichinger's Munich Film School. Uli became friends with Eichinger, and the two began collaborating in the filmmaking field, sharing a love for the French New Wave and Italian neo-realism, as well as popular American films. While studying at the film school, Edel took acting lessons, wanting to know the theories of Stanislavsky and Strasberg. After graduation, Uli worked as an assistant director for Douglas Sirk and directed two television productions.
Uli made his first independent film in 1971, the short film Der kleine Soldat. In 1980, he, along with Bernd Eichinger and screenwriter Hermann Weigel, filmed the story of a teenage drug addict Christiane F. (German Christiane F.) "We are children of Zoo station." Six years later, Edel, Eichinger and Weigel teamed up again to make the film “Last Turn to Brooklyn,” based on the novel by Hubert Selby.
In 2004, Edel directed the TV film The Ring of the Nibelungen, based on the Volsunga Saga.
His film "The Baader - Meinhof Complex" (2008) was nominated for BAFTA, Oscar and Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film. And the film "Body as Evidence" brought a nomination for "Golden Raspberry" for the worst direction.
Also among Edel's works is Body as Evidence, which was nominated for six Golden Raspberry and Rasputin awards (three Golden Globes in 1997 and three Emmy awards in 1996).
