Born July 10, 1977, Oakland, California, USA - American producer, cameraman, director and screenwriter.

Fukunaga began first as a trainee with a camera and later tried to enter film school. He graduated from the University of California at Santa Cruz with a BA in History in 1999 and entered the Institute for Political Studies of Grenoble. He enrolled in the Tisch School of the Arts alumni film program at New York University.

Fukunaga wrote and directed the short film Victoria para Chino (2004) while studying at New York University. The film was screened at the Sundance Film Festival and won an Academy Student Award in 2005. The short won the Audience Award for Best Student Narrative Short Film at the Austin Film Festival in 2004.

Fukunaga made his film debut with No Name, where he wrote and directed, and received positive reviews. The film has received numerous awards including a Director's Award at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival and a New Director at the 2009 Edinburgh Film Festival.

In 2010, Fukunaga directed a new adaptation of Jane Eyre, starring Mia Wasikowska, Michael Fassbender, Jamie Bell and Judy Dench. The film was released in 2011 and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Costume Design.

Fukunaga directed and wrote the script for the film "Rootless Beasts", based on the novel of the same name by Uzodinma Iweala, in which Idris Elba played the role of the Commander, the main character. The film was handpicked by Netflix for $ 12 million as part of an effort to expand with original films. On November 25, 2015, Fukunaga was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for Best Director and Best Cinematography for his work on Rootless Beasts, and the film received a Best Picture nomination.

Fukunaga directed all eight episodes of the first season of HBO's True Detective, written and written by novelist, science fiction writer and screenwriter Nick Pizzolatto. Fukunaga was also the executive producer of the show. The series received critical praise and was nominated for 5 Emmy awards, including Best Drama Series and Best Director by Fukunagi. On the second season of True Detective, Fukunaga worked only as an executive producer.
