Born March 30, 1930, Baltimore, Maryland - American actor who has appeared in numerous films and television shows. Graduated from Johns Hopkins University in 1952, after moving from Washington and Jefferson. He first studied mathematics in Washington and Jefferson and then at Johns Hopkins University; was a member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity at Johns Hopkins University.
Austin began his career in theater as a stunt double for Major Barbara on Broadway - and has written a job review for commercials. His first big break in film came in West Side Story in 1961.
During this period, he played in comedies, where his talent was noticed by actor Tony Randall. This led Astin to a guest starring role on Dennis the Menace. In 1962-1963, Astin starred with Marty Ingels in ABC's unusual sitcom I Am Dickens He Fenster, which had thirty-one episodes. In 1964-1966, he starred in The Addams Family as Gomez Addams, the head of the family. He also appeared on The New Addams Family as Grandpa Addams in 1998. Glenn Taranto plays Gomez Addams. Astin joined the redevelopment at the Pruitts of Southampton during the second half of the season (1966-1967) playing dealer (brother-in-law) Angus Pruitt. He also played Riddler in the second season of Batman. Astin made a significant appearance on the hit show Murder as the villainous Sheriff Harry Pierce. He had a recurring role on the sitcom Night Court, as a buddy, eccentric ex-mentally ill, and father of the protagonist Harry Stone. Astin occasionally starred in numerous television series. Astin won an Oscar in the Prelude category for the short film for which he wrote the screenplay. He was nominated for an award for Tales from the Crypt, and received an Emmy nomination for the voice of Gomez in The Addams Family. Astin served four years on the Board of Directors of the Writers Guild of America and was also active in community affairs in Los Angeles and Santa Monica.
