April 29, 1936 - July 13, 2005 - American actor.
He graduated from The Leelanau School in Glen Arbor, Michigan and spent one year at The Hill School in Potstone, Pennsylvania before leaving to study at Acting Studio. After graduation, he found a permanent job at the New York theater. During the 1970s, he regularly appeared in small film roles including Rooster Cogburn and The Network. In 1981, he starred in Sidney Lumet's film Prince of the City. He made a big break in 1984 with significant roles in the films Red Dawn, Places in the Heart and the television series V. He also took part in the TV series Quincy, ME. In 1989, Smith garnered great acclaim for his role as former President Richard Nixon in the documentary drama The Final Days. Newsweek praised Smith for his role. In 1990, he starred in the film Air America where he played the role of a Senator. Two years later, he played the role of the district attorney in the film My Cousin Vinnie, and then the role of the trainer in the film Powerful Ducklings. In 1993, Smith landed a co-star in the hit television series Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, where he played in 84 episodes over four seasons. Lane Smith's last film was The Legend of Bugger Vance with Will Smith and Matt Damon in 2000, after which the actor was filmed for TV only. Smith was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in April 2005. He died of illness at his home in Northridge, California on June 13, 2005 at the age of 69.
