Born June 19, 1948 - American actress and singer.
She is the older sister of actress, director and choreographer Debbie Allen. She first achieved widespread fame for her role in the Broadway musical Dreamgirls. In later stages of her career, she performed in such productions as August: Osage County, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Pearl of the Ocean, Raisin in the Sun, which earned her a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play in 2004, and many other productions.
Rashad has achieved her greatest success as a wealthy lawyer, Claire Huxtable, in The Cosby Show opposite Bill Cosby. The show became the biggest hit of the 1980s, reviving the sitcom genre as well as diversifying into television, as one of the first successful starring African Americans. For her performance on the series, Rashad was twice nominated for an Emmy Award for Best Actress in a Comedy Television Series and received several other awards. The show ran for eight seasons, from 1984 to 1992.
In 1996, Rashad returned to television with a role in the sitcom Cosby, again with Bill Cosby. The show, although successful, was not as big as their previous project and ended in 2000. In 2008, she starred in the TV movie Raisins in the Sun, a TV version of the play, and was nominated for an Emmy Award for Best Actress in a Miniseries or Film and the Screen Actors Guild for Best Actress in a TV Movie or Miniseries. In 2010, she was part of the ensemble of the film "Love Songs", and in 2012 she played the role of Clary in the film "Steel Magnolias", the next version of the play of the same name by Robert Harling. Also during that period, she began acting in the television series "Do No Harm" .
Phylicia Rashad was married three times, she has a daughter, Condola Rashad, also an actress. They starred together in the 2012 film Steel Magnolias.
