Pete Travis worked as a social worker before becoming a director. Travis bought the rights to film the short story Faith by Nick Horby, investing the same amount and directed the film, which premiered at the London Film Festival on November 11, 1997.
In 2003, Paul Greengrass sent Travis the script for Omah, a dramatization of the Omah Attack. The film premiered at the 2004 Toronto Film Festival, where it won a Discovery Award. The following year, the film also received a BAFTA award for Best Single Drama.
In 2010, it became known that Travis would direct the film Dredd.
