February 25, 1943, Liverpool - November 29, 2001, Los Angeles - British rock musician, singer, composer, writer, producer, sitarist and guitarist, best known as the lead guitarist of The Beatles. Harrison is ranked 21st on Rolling Stone magazine's 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. Harrison was not only a singer, songwriter, guitarist and sitarist, but also a music producer and innovator. In the 1960s, Harrison converted to Hinduism, which significantly influenced his subsequent creative and social activities. Harrison has played a key role in sparking Western interest in Indian culture, Hinduism and the Hare Krishna movement.
While most of The Beatles' songs were written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, Harrison also wrote and performed several songs on each of the band's albums. From the later period of the ensemble's creativity, the authorship of Harrison owns such hits as "Here Comes the Sun", "Something" and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". Following the band's disbandment, Harrison embarked on a successful solo career, releasing the first-ever "triple" album, All Things Must Pass, which became the first solo album by an ex-Beatle to reach the top position in the charts. The song "My Sweet Lord" was released as a separate single, which also reached the top of the charts. This song dedicated to Krishna became not only the biggest hit of Harrison's solo career, but also the subject of many years of lawsuit over the fact that Harrison was accused of plagiarism. In 1971, Harrison became the first rock star to stage a major benefit concert, Concert for Bangladesh. In addition to his solo work, Harrison co-wrote several songs by another ex-Beatle Ringo Starr, as well as the songwriter of the supergroup The Traveling Wilburys, which he founded in 1988 with Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynn and Roy Orbison. George Harrison is the only Beatle to publish an autobiography (I, I, Mine, 1980). Harrison's other award with The Beatles was an Oscar, which the Beatles received in 1970 for Best Soundtrack for Let It Be. In 1990, the minor planet 4149, discovered on March 9, 1984, was named after Harrison. In 2002, Harrison was posthumously awarded the BAFTA Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Development of Cinematography. On March 15, 2004, Harrison was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist. On August 1, 2006, Harrison was inducted into the Madison Square Garden Walk of Fame (for Concert for Bangladesh). As a member of The Beatles and The Traveling Wilburys, and throughout his solo career, George Harrison has received a total of 13 Grammy Awards; the last of them, already posthumously, in 2003, for the musical composition "Marwa Blues" from the album Brainwashed. Harrison appeared twice on the cover of Time magazine: in 1967 with other Beatles, and in 2001, after his death. On April 14, 2009, Harrison received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2011, Martin Scorsese's documentary about Harrison's life was released, entitled George Harrison: Living in the Material World.
