He began acting in films in the late 1970s. In 1995, he appeared in one episode of the science fiction television series Babylon 5, where he played a ranger. From 2004 to 2010 he played Edward Mars in the American television series Lost. After the death of his character, he was invited to the TV series "Supernatural" where he played the yellow-eyed demon Azazel. He also starred in the films "Ordinary People", "Being There", "Men in Black" and others.
