His father is Richard Byron Van Patten, a Dutch-American interior designer. Among his half-siblings are actor Dick Van Patten (born 1928) and actress Joyce Van Patten (born 1943).
Tim also went through an acting school on television before getting behind the camera. He made his debut as a director in the English comedy series. Home Fires 1992. Gaining practical experience by participating in the filming of the mystical series "Touched by an Angel". He began collaborating with the cable channel HBO in 1999, working on The Sopranos. By the time the Underground Empire was filmed, he had already had over two dozen television projects on his account.
