When he was less than two years old, he and his family moved to Los Angeles.
After graduating from high school, following his father's example, he began training as a police officer, while obtaining a pilot's license. In 1941, after the Japanese air raid on Pearl Harbor, Gene was drafted into the US Air Force. He served in the Air Force from 1941 to 1945 on the B-17 bomber. During the war, he flew 89 combat missions, received the rank of lieutenant and distinguished service awards.
After the war, Gene took a job as a co-pilot with Pan American. After a plane crash in 1947, he decided to give up his flying career and got a job with the Los Angeles Police Force, where he served from 1949 to 1956.
In the 1950s, Gene Roddenberry worked as a screenwriter for American television and took part in the series Have Gun - Will Travel and other serials.
In addition to working on TV series, Roddenberry wrote the feature film Star Trek: The Film (1979).
