Since childhood, he was fond of cinema and at the age of fourteen he already shot his first short film with an amateur camera. At the same time he is interested in photography and literature, especially by Harry Dixon, Proust and Andre Breton. He made his acting debut in 1942 in a small role in the film "The Evening Visitors". In 1943 he entered the Institute of Cinematography at the Faculty of Editing Direction.
In 1946 in Germany he participates in the front theater under the direction of Andre Voisin. In the same year, he worked as an assistant director and editor for the film Paris 1900. Alain Rene's directorial debut was the short documentary Van Gogh (1947). Over the next ten years, he produced several documentaries, including one about the Peschina factory.
He gained worldwide fame thanks to his successful collaboration with French writers of the “new novel” school. In particular, in 1959 his film Hiroshima, My Love, written by Marguerite Duras, was released, and in 1961 - Last Year in Marienbad, the script for which was written by Alain Robbe-Grillet.
Some of Rene's best-known works also include the film War Is Over, directed by Jorge Semprun, about Francoist Spain, and Staviski, about the life of the French swindler Alexander Stavisky. In total, the director's filmography includes about 20 full-length films.
