December 10, 1903 - January 2, 1986 - American actress.
She was born in Covington, Kentucky. Her resemblance to Lillian Gish helped her become an actress. She started out as a stunt double for the famous actress in the 1920 film Waterfall of Life. A few years later, she had her own roles in silent films. But during the silent film days, she did not achieve popularity as a film actress and to a large extent played on the theatrical stages of Broadway. Una Merkel became popular with the beginning of the talkie era. In 1932, she signed a contract with MGM and for the next six years she played up to twelve film roles a year. She starred in many famous films of the time, including 42nd Street (1933), The Merry Widow (1934), Saratoga (1937) and Destry's Law (1939). Mostly she played supporting roles, such as the girlfriends of the main characters played by Jean Harlow, Loretta Young and Dorothy Lamour. Merkel married only once: in 1932, to Ronald Burla, whom she divorced in 1945.
Una Merkel's film career began to decline towards the end of the 1940s. She still continued to act in films, but in a noticeably fewer films. At the same time, she began to appear more on the stage, and in 1956 she won the Tony Award for her role in the Broadway production of The Ponder Family .
Merkel gained attention again in 1961 after playing Mrs. Weinmiller in Summer and Smoke, for which she was nominated for an Oscar as Best Supporting Actress. Her last film role was Violet Runley in Elvis Presley's A Weekend in California in 1966. For her contribution to the US film industry, the actress was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Una Merkel died in Los Angeles on January 2, 1986 at the age of 82.
